🐾 Why We Do Not Recommend Early Spay or Neuter

Another important topic we discuss with our puppy families is the timing of spaying or neutering.

While spay and neuter decisions are personal choices that should always be discussed with your veterinarian, we encourage families to consider allowing their Dachshund to fully mature before making that decision.

Hormones play an important role in a growing puppy’s development. They contribute to:

🐾 Joint and ligament development
🐾 Muscle development
🐾 Overall physical development

Dachshunds are a long-backed breed, meaning protecting proper structure and supporting healthy development is especially important.

Early alteration may affect the way a puppy’s body matures, and some studies have suggested possible links between early spay/neuter and changes in joint health, growth patterns, and other long-term health considerations.

Our goal is always to encourage families to make informed decisions based on their individual dog, lifestyle, and veterinary guidance.

Our Recommendation

We recommend allowing your puppy time to mature physically before considering spay or neuter, unless there is a specific medical reason to do so earlier.
